The IMA is gradually implementing Internet-based programs to improve our service to you. As a result , we have changed the way we send out the Newsletter. We would like to e-mail you a notice when the next IMA Newsletter is available on the IMA Web page, instead of mailing you a hard copy. The IMA will continue to mail a hard copy to specific departments, for posting purposes. that we would like you to complete which will give the IMA enough information to keep you on our Newsletter mailing list. If you cannot retrieve the newsletter from the Web, please call the IMA staff at 612-624-6066 or e-mail [email protected] if you would like to continue to receive a hard copy of the IMA Newsletter. Please respond by June 15 so you will be included in the next newsletter mailing. If we do not hear from you and we cannot obtain an e-mail address for you, you may be removed from the mailing list. We hope this will become a more efficient way of sharing the IMA Newsletter with you. Thank you for taking the time to respond to this. As was the case last year, all postdocs were offered two year appointments. These postdocs will be active participants in all activities of the annual program. They were chosen from a long list of well-qualified recent Ph. D. recipients. The page is continually under construction. We invite comments or suggestions, which may be addressed to In particular, we appreciate any information about WorldWide Web links appropriate to current and upcoming IMA programs. Abstract: Schools of fish are formed by moving individuals who align their body axes (i.e. direction of movement). Simple models based on transport equations in one and two spatial dimensions are presented and investigated. Comparison to earlier alignment models is made. It is shown how alignment can lead to survival in situations where a non-aligning population dies out, for example due to predation. Organizers: Bruce Ayati and Ralf Wittenberg NOTE: The Postdoc Seminar is organized by the IMA postdoctoral members, but all interested IMA participants are encouraged to attend. Abstract: The Canadian mathematics community has recently united under the efforts of three mathematics institutes (including the Pacific Institute for the Mathematical Sciences, PIMS) and obtained funding for a Networks of Centers of 3 Excellence ¡ proposal called The Mathematics of Information Technology and Complex Systems (MITACS). In recent years surface waves have found wide applications in various seismological studies of a very different scale. We present a brief description of our recent results in regional surface wave tomography of continents, in applying these results for nuclear tests monitoring purposes, and in studying shear-velocity structure of soft sediments below sea bottom. 4:20–4:50 Edo Nyland Univ. of Al...

متن کاملM ATHEMATICS I NSTITUTE 2014 : 04 A New Proof of the Atomic Decomposition of Hardy Spaces
A new proof is given of the atomic decomposition of Hardy spaces Hp, 0 < p ≤ 1, in the classical setting on Rn. The new method can be used to establish atomic decomposition of maximal Hardy spaces in general and nonclassical settings.

Greedy algorithms which use only function evaluations are applied to convex optimization in a general Banach space X. Along with algorithms that use exact evaluations, algorithms with approximate evaluations are treated. A priori upper bounds for the convergence rate of the proposed algorithms are given. These bounds depend on the smoothness of the objective function and the sparsity or compres...
